Calcium is essential for a wide range of functions:

Too much or too little calcium in the bloodstream can cause arrhythmia.
Female hormone balance. Calcium works in partnership with nutrients like magnesium and vitamin B6 to regulate hormonal activity. Randomized controlled trials have demonstrated the effectiveness of calcium for relieving PMS (pre-menstrual syndrome) symptoms both as a stand-alone supplement and in conjunction with vitamin B6 [5,6].

The most commonly prescribed calcium supplements are made from calcium carbonate. It’s a cheap form of calcium with a much lower absorption rate than calcium citrate and often causes constipation.

Calcium carbonate is also used in over-the-counter indigestion remedies because it’s good at neutralising stomach acid. However, stomach acid is vital for liberating zinc, magnesium, and other bone-building nutrients from food.

Calcium citrate has a higher absorption rate than the carbonate form. It doesn't neutralise stomach acid and is unlikely to cause any digestive side effects.

There's slightly less elemental calcium in the citrate version than in carbonate but this is offset by the higher bioavailability and absorption rate.
