Also known as Winter Cherry and Indian Ginseng, ashwagandha is a shrub that grows in drier regions of South East Asia, the Middle East, and parts of Africa.

Ayurvedic physicians have used it for thousands of years as a rejuvenating tonic for fatigue, fertility, stress, immunity, endurance, strength, and longevity [1].

In the West, it is classed as an adaptogen, an herb that helps the body adapt and cope with different forms of stress.

The name ashwagandha translates as "smell of a horse"! Not because it will make you smell like one (it's only the freshly dug roots that have an equine scent!), but because the plant is said to provide the strength and vitality of a horse.

Ashwagandha is a well-studied herb with renowned benefits for:

Managing stress and anxiety. As an adaptogen, ashwagandha helps the body adapt and cope with physical, mental, or emotional stress. In adults with chronic stress, ashwagandha extract is shown to lower cortisol levels and improve feelings of resilience and quality of life [2].

Withanolides are the main active components of ashwagandha. To date, more than 50 withanolides have been isolated from the leaves, roots, and berries of ashwagandha [7].
