What do electrolytes do?

Electrolytes are a group of minerals that have a positive or a negative electrical charge in the body. The main electrolyte minerals are sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and chloride.

The electrical charge makes them essential for cell health, fluid balance, muscle function, and nervous system activity:

Magnesium contributes to normal muscle function, normal nervous system function, and reduction of tiredness and fatigue [1]. Calcium and potassium contribute to normal muscle function and normal functioning of the nervous system [1].

Chloride contributes to normal digestion by production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach [1]. Healthy digestion and fluid absorption go hand in hand for effective rehydration, especially during exercise and recovery.

Why take amino acids with electrolytes?

Most electrolyte products use sugars or artificial sweeteners to support mineral absorption, but at Ethical Nutrition we have a zero sugar and sweeteners policy. So, we looked at the latest sports nutrition science and opted to use amino acids instead, to enhance the uptake and performance of the product. This gives us the same benefits without any of the downsides for gut and metabolic health associated with sugar and artificial sweeteners.

Why do you use chelated minerals?

Many brands use the same inorganic forms of minerals that you find in rocks and the oceans.

Given that humans haven’t evolved to digest nutrients from rocks and seawater, we think these aren’t the best forms to use!

The term “chelated” means a mineral is tightly bound to its carrier molecule (e.g. taurine) for optimum absorption. Chelated minerals are more soluble and better absorbed compared to inorganic forms like oxides and carbonates.

For example, research shows that calcium citrate is 22-27% better absorbed than calcium carbonate [2], and organic forms of magnesium are more bioavailable than magnesium oxide or sulphate [3]. Better absorption lowers the risk of unpleasant gastrointestinal side-effects seen with poorly absorbed, inorganic minerals.

Who can benefit from taking electrolytes?

Electrolytes can benefit anyone looking for: Rehydration support during and after exercise, or while travelling. Rehydration support during recovery from illness. Managing tiredness and fatigue. Muscle and nervous system support. Daily mineral support, especially during hot weather when minerals are easily lost through sweat.

Does Hydrate Electrolytes contain any sugar or flavourings?

No, Hydrate Electrolytes is free from sugar, artificial sweeteners, and flavourings of any kind. This is an important point because these ingredients can cause several issues:

- Sweeteners are often poorly tolerated and may cause upset stomach.

- Sugars have a knock-on effect on dental and metabolic health.

- Flavourings may be artificial or natural but the “natural” part can be a misnomer. Many “natural” flavourings contain naturally derived ingredients alongside a cocktail of synthetic additives and preservatives. Vanilla is a good example of this. Natural vanilla flavouring can be sourced from vanillin, the organic compound in vanilla beans, but it may be mixed with caramel as a colouring, potassium sorbate as a preservative, and propylene glycol as a carrier for the flavour compounds. Not so natural after all!

Are there any side effects?
