The body uses glucosamine to make glycosaminoglycans, a key component in joint tissues like cartilage and ligaments, and synovial fluid that keeps joints lubricated. It can protect chondrocytes (joint cells) from inflammatory damage and may support cartilage repair.
Because of this, glucosamine has a well-deserved reputation for managing joint pain and supporting mobility, especially in joints affected by osteoarthritis (more commonly known as “wear and tear” arthritis).
The majority of research focuses on the benefits for knee osteoarthritis.
In 2023, a review examining 15 randomized controlled trials using 1500mg glucosamine a day concluded that [1]:
- Glucosamine significantly reduced pain scores compared to a placebo.
- Glucosamine also improved knee stiffness and physical function. It was safe and well tolerated with no serious side effects.
Most glucosamine supplements are made from chitin, a substance found in the outer shell of crustaceans such as lobster, prawn, and crab, and in the cell walls of fungi [2].
The process of extracting glucosamine from shellfish uses a lot of water and hazardous chemicals like sodium hydroxide and hydrochloric acid. It generates a great deal of toxic waste that harms the environment.
Vegan forms of glucosamine can be made from fungi or via natural glucose fermentation. Fungal extraction also carries a high environmental price tag so we opt to use GlucosaGreen®, a type of glucosamine derived from glucose.
To make GlucosaGreen®, glucose is extracted from non-GMO corn and put through a natural fermentation process. This allows the glucose to transform into glucosamine without generating harmful side products.
There are many advantages to choosing vegan glucosamine over shellfish-based products:
- No risk of shellfish allergy reactions.
- Kosher.
- Vegan friendly.
- Better for the environment, GlucosaGreen® produces 98% less landfill waste compared to shellfish-based glucosamine, and no toxic chemical byproducts.
- Sustainable production methods.
- No impurity risks associated with shellfish products.
Our Vegan Glucosamine is ideal for anyone who wants to support joint and connective tissue health in a sustainable, environmentally responsible, plant-based way. This includes people who are:
- Dealing with joint pain and/or stiffness.
- Managing “wear and tear” arthritis (osteoarthritis).
- Recovering from sports injuries.
Our Vegan Glucosamine provided 1500mg per dose (2 capsules), the optimum amount for daily joint support.
When taken as directed our Vegan Glucosamine is safe and well tolerated. Sensitive individuals may experience temporary mild nausea, bloating, changes in bowel movements, or headache.
Glucosamine may potentially interact with Warfarin and other prescription drugs.
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding or taking any prescribed medication, we recommend you speak with your healthcare provider before taking Vegan Glucosamine.
