Calcium is essential for a wide range of functions:
- Development and maintenance of strong bones. Over 90% of your body’s calcium is in the mineral matrix inside bones. Low calcium intake appears to be positively correlated with the development of osteoporosis [1].
- Nerve signal transmission and maintain a healthy nervous system. Calcium helps stabilize cell membranes and regulate excitatory neurons [2].
- Muscle function. Muscle fibres rely on calcium and magnesium to be able to contract and relax properly. An imbalance in either mineral can lead to muscle cramps and spasms.
- Dental health. Calcium is critical for healthy tooth development and the strength and integrity of bones in the jaw.
- Blood clotting. One of the less well-known roles calcium plays in the body is in blood clotting processes [3].
- Maintaining a normal heart rhythm. Your heart is a large muscle and like any other muscle cells, it relies on calcium to contract properly. Calcium ions are used by heart cells when they contract and pump blood [4]. It's also needed for the heart's electrical rhythms. Too much or too little calcium in the bloodstream can cause arrhythmia.
- Female hormone balance. Calcium works in partnership with nutrients like magnesium and vitamin B6 to regulate hormonal activity. Randomized controlled trials have demonstrated the effectiveness of calcium for relieving PMS (pre-menstrual syndrome) symptoms both as a stand-alone supplement and in conjunction with vitamin B6 [5,6].
The most commonly prescribed calcium supplements are made from calcium carbonate. It’s a cheap form of calcium with a much lower absorption rate than calcium citrate and often causes constipation.
Calcium carbonate is also used in over-the-counter indigestion remedies because it’s good at neutralising stomach acid. However, stomach acid is vital for liberating zinc, magnesium, and other bone-building nutrients from food.
Calcium citrate has a higher absorption rate than the carbonate form. It doesn't neutralise stomach acid and is unlikely to cause any digestive side effects.
There's slightly less elemental calcium in the citrate version than in carbonate but this is offset by the higher bioavailability and absorption rate.
Calcium citrate is the preferred form of calcium for bone health because of its high bioavailability and absorption rate and low risk of side effects.
Calcium citrate may be helpful for people who want to:
- Enhance their dietary intake of calcium. If your diet is low in leafy greens, nuts and seeds, pulses, or dairy products you may benefit from extra calcium.
- Maintain bone density and strength.
- Manage osteopenia or osteoporosis.
- Support their dental health.
- Manage muscle cramps.
- Support nerve signalling and a healthy heart rhythm.
- Manage PMS symptoms.
Yes, calcium supplements can interact with many types of medication including antibiotics and thyroid medication. We recommend you speak to your healthcare provider before taking calcium citrate alongside any prescription medications or other mineral supplements.
People with hyperparathyroidism, prostate cancer, kidney stones, or chronic kidney disease should not supplement calcium without medical supervision
Unlike cheap forms of calcium carbonate, our calcium citrate is well tolerated and unlikely to cause digestive issues.
